Limit the Word Count in Essay Questions

April 13, 2020 | 1 Minute Read

As faculty have become more dependent on CoursePlus to deliver quizzes and exams in the past few years, the CoursePlus team has been asked a number of times if it's possible to limit the length, or word count, of a student response in an essay question in an exam. We're pleased to announce support for limiting the word count in an essay question is now available in CoursePlus.

When you edit an essay question, you'll see the option to limit the number of words a student can enter as their answer:

If a student is typing in the rich text editor and reaches the word count, they cannot type any further and are shown an alert that they have reached the word count limit. If a student tries to copy and paste text that goes over the word count limit, they are unable to do so and are shown an alert to that effect.

We hope that this makes it easier for some of you to administer online quizzes and exams. If you have any questions about how this feature works, please contact CTL Help!
