Retiring the CoursePlus Text Chat Module
Real-time communication is a cornerstone of education. Whether in the classroom or across the world, the ability to meet, discuss, and engage with one another is a critical part of the learning process. For over fifteen years, CoursePlus has provided an always-available meeting option: the text chat module.
The text chat module has, in all of its incarnations, allowed for students, TAs, and faculty to chat via simple text messages in real time. With the advent of multiple communications options during the text chat module’s existence, its limitations have become painfully clear. Students, faculty, and staff expect rich audio and video experiences. Tools like Zoom and Teams, which are widely used across the University, provide those experiences. As a result, usage of the text chat module has dropped precipitously in the last few years.
Given the limited use of the text chat module, and the power and availability of Zoom, Teams, and other tools, the CoursePlus team will remove the text chat module from CoursePlus at the end of May, 2022.
