Students Can Now Insert Images into Essay Question Responses

June 22, 2023 | 1 Minute Read

Open-ended questions in a quiz or exam — known as essay questions in the CoursePlus Quiz Generator — are a great way for students to demonstrate expertise in a specific topic or domain. Essay questions can include text, tables, drawings, and now, images.

Students can now insert an image into the rich text editor displayed to them while composing a response to an essay question in a quiz or exam. This adds additional flexibility in the kinds of quiz or exam questions that can be asked of students. If you need students to “show their work” in a calculation problem, they can do work on a physical piece of paper, take a picture of the paper, and then include that image in their response. (They will likely need to transfer the photo from their phone to their laptop first.)

It’s important to note the following:

  • There currently is no way to resize the image once selected. It’s up to the student to provide the image at a reasonable size. The CoursePlus team is working on a resizing tool for the image uploader in the rich text editor in CoursePlus.
  • There is no one-click download to get all the images included in responses to a single question or all questions in a quiz.
  • Images do appear inline when viewing the individual student responses page or grading all answers to a single question. Images do not appear in the Excel export of all responses and grades for a quiz or exam. This is a limitation of Excel.

We hope that the ability to insert images into essay question responses provides additional flexibility to faculty currently using the Quiz Generator. If you have questions about this new feature, CTL Help is happy to answer your questions.
