Answer: If you see a "Connecting..." message that does not go away after 60 seconds when trying to get in to a LiveTalk session, your computer is unable to connect to the LiveTalk system due to network firewall or other connection issues.

The first thing you should do is to close the window with the "Connecting..." message and try again. Sometimes your connection will simply be lost and trying again can resolve the issue.

Other issues that could cause a connection problem are:

  • If you are at work or using a wireless connection that doesn't support the port that LiveTalk uses, please use an ethernet cable and try the connection test again.
  • If you are connected to a Virtual Private Network (VPN), even if it is JHU, this will also prevent you from connecting to a livetalk since you may be on a network that doesn't have port 1935 open.

If you try to connect once again and still cannot connect, your computer is most likely on a network protected by a firewall which is blocking connections to the LiveTalk system. Please see the following FAQs for instructions on what you need to do to address this issue:
