Looking for Student Feedback on the BBS

The Center is in the beginning stages of redesigning the BBS (threaded discussion system) used in all online courses and CoursePlus. We've received quite a bit of feedback about the BBS over the years, and we really want to make something that works the way students, TAs, and faculty need and expect it to work.

We're looking for students who want to help us improve the BBS and make it an even more useful tool. We're looking for students who have taken at least one course other than Introduction to Online Learning where the BBS has been used. This could be in a fully online course or an on-campus course which used the BBS as part of the CoursePlus site for the course.

You'll be asked for advice and feedback as we develop the new version of the BBS. We want to hear from you throughout the development process. This would entail a couple of email or Web-based correspondences over the next few months. We might even run a LiveTalk session or two to show off the ideas that we have and solicit feedback from you in real time. It's not a big time commitment, but we really do want to hear detailed feedback from everyone who participates.

If you're interested in participating in this feedback process, please email bklaas at jhsph.edu.

Improving the CoursePlus Class Sessions Tool

We've received a lot of feedback about the class sessions tool in CoursePlus over the past couple of years. Revamping that tool has been a priority to us, but we just haven't been able to allocate resources to the project — until now. We've collected the feedback we've received thus far, but want to make sure that our plans fit in line with your needs for the tool.

If you've ever edited class session information in CoursePlus, could you take two minutes to fill out this brief survey on the class sessions tool? It would be very helpful to us in our planning!

Having Trouble Opening PDF Files?

In the last six weeks, we've received reports from a number of students and some faculty who have had problems opening PDF files from both CoursePlus and online courses. If this happens to you, we strongly recommend that you update your Adobe Reader to the latest version of the software. This has resolved the problem in every case we've seen so far.

A security patch for Windows released in June has caused issues with older versions of the Adobe Reader application. If you are using an older version of the Adobe Reader application, you may have difficulty opening PDF files from some Web sites.

Adobe Reader is an increasingly popular vector of attack for malicious hackers, and it is strongly recommended by security experts (and Adobe itself) that you always update the application to the latest version.
